A brief history: Three waves of Feminism-
- First wave of Feminism (1830's- early 1900's): Women fought for equal contract and property rights. During this time the women realised that they must first gain political power including the right to vote. The political agenda expanded to issues concerning sexual, reproductive and economic matters. This touched off American women's suffrage movement.
- Second wave of Feminism ( 1960's-1980's): After the second world war women started to come of their heels and participate in workplace. During the time when US was already trying to reconstruct itself, women had met their equality goals with the exception of failures.
- Third wave of Feminism (1990's-present): It emerged to address earlier critiques of feminism. it attempted to reach out to women of colour, transgender women and sex workers. women of colour became increasingly active during this time.
